UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL LANCASHIRE

OVERVIEW

The University of Central Lancashire’s (UCLan) campus is in Preston, North-West England. Preston is England’s newest city, has a multicultural population and is a hub of national and international road, rail and air links. The cost of living is low compared with many other parts of the UK. The city is surrounded by beautiful countryside and is only a short distance from the bigger cities of Manchester and Liverpool and the stunning Lake District national park

ACADEMIC STRENGTHS

The University possesses one of the most comprehensive portfolios of subject choice in the UK within an innovative modular structure - with nearly 600 undergraduate courses on offer, over 180 taught postgraduate programmes and a range of research specialisms including astrophysics, fire and explosion studies, health and forensic and investigative science.

Research of international excellence is at the heart of the academic life of the University. It contributes to the development of learning programmes and brings vitality and dynamism to the learning environment.

UCLan is one of the very few institutions to receive an 'excellent' rating in more than 13 key teaching areas.

FACILITIES

The University has plenty of good quality accommodation. Most is located on campus, which is close to the city centre with easy access to public transport, shops and great nightlife. The halls of residence are close to the teaching buildings and most student houses are within two miles (three kilometres) of the campus. All accommodation is self-catering.

Meals and snacks are available in two large refectories, several coffee bars, the Students’ Union and many takeaways, cafés, bars and restaurants close to campus. Kitchens in halls are suitable for preparing light snacks.

During the last 10 years the University has invested more than £77 million to provide a modern living and learning environment for its students. The Library Learning and Resource Service (LLRS) is a modern, four-storey building. Computer terminals are available here and in several buildings across campus. Students have free internet access, email address and personal area on our computer network. During term time, computing resources are available seven days a week, 24 hours a day. The Student Information Centre, known as The “i”, is a modern, award winning facility. Other facilities include an indoor sports centre, a new £12 million outdoor Sports Arena, a £15 million media factory and a Health Centre.

STUDENT LIFE

We encourage students to make the most of the wide range of recreational opportunities on offer.

There’s plenty of entertainment in the new award-winning Students’ Union building including live band, stage shows, dance nights, quizzes and live football coverage. There are more than 60 societies and sports clubs to join including the International Society which organises events and sight-seeing trips. The University regularly hosts music, theatre and art exhibitions.

Government inspectors have praised UCLan’s Student Support Services as amongst the best in the UK. As well as an academic tutor who will advise you about your coursework, you can get help from specially trained advisers on personal and financial matters and careers. There’s also help and support for students with disabilities and learning difficulties.

The University’s multi-faith centre gives a warm welcome to students whatever their religion. We have an International Students’ Advice Team, which offers information, support and guidance. There is also a free international students’ orientation week before the start of term. Free English language support is available throughout your course.
