BATH SPA UNIVERSITY

OVERVIEW

Bath Spa University can trace its origins back to 1852 when the Art School was founded. It is a medium-sized institution with around 5,500 students offering pre-degree study, undergraduate degrees and postgraduate degrees in art & design, performing arts, education, humanities, business & management and many other subjects. It is linked with more than 50 institutions in Europe, North Asia, South-East Asia, the USA and Africa.

Bath Spa University accepts students from around 35 to 40 countries each year on a variety of programmes. International students account for roughly 3% of its overall student population.

The University has two beautiful teaching sites within and around Bath. The larger campus at Newton Park is set four miles west of Bath. The other is at Sion Hill in the centre of Bath.

Bath is England’s only World Heritage City and is famous for its Roman Baths and Georgian architecture, as well as its Abbey. Excellent shopping, the theatre and its art galleries give Bath a cosmopolitan yet traditional feel.

FACILITIES

International students can stay on campus (if they apply early) or in homestay accommodation. All campus accommodation is self-catering with cookers, microwaves and fridge-freezers provided in all kitchens. Many rooms have views over the beautiful parkland surroundings. Art & Design students at Sion Hill campus can live in a converted Georgian terrace, Somerset Place, near the city centre.

The campus has its own lakes, nature reserve, woods, farmland and numerous historic buildings. A frequent bus service takes students right into the city centre. There are modern library facilties, lecture theatres, laboratories and 2 performing arts venues.

In the Students’ Union building is a large bar, common room, bookshop, stationery shop and general shop – which won a prize for best university shop in 2003 and 2006

In the University’s Sion Hill campus, art and design working areas include graphic design studios; electronic media workshops; studios for art, textiles and sculpture; workshops for wood, etching, lithography and silkscreen; and photography darkrooms.

STUDENT LIFE

Our small size means you will receive personal attention and support to help you achieve your goals. The International Activities Department assists international students with all aspects of their application process, arrival information, accommodation and general welfare. The International Student Adviser organises social events and trips for students. A homestay co-ordinator carefully selects suitable homestay families for our students.

The Students’ Union is run by students for students. As with most Students’ Unions around the country, the SU at Bath Spa University offers plenty of clubs and societies including hockey, men’s and women’s rugby, men’s and women’s football, the Christian Union, kung fu, judo, human rights, swimming, African drumming and beat poetry.
